Ortho-K: Support Glasses-Free Activities Without Surgery

Are glasses getting in the way of you or your kids' activities? Do you want to be glasses-free but not yet eligible for LASIK?

“Dr. YAP” Eye Hospital now presents Ortho-K technology for the first free glasses in Yogyakarta.

Orthokeratology or often called Ortho-K is a contact lens procedure specifically designed to reshape the cornea of the eye with the aim of eliminating refractive errors (minus and cylinder eyes) and inhibiting the increase in minus. Ortho-K lenses are worn at night to shape the surface of the cornea while you sleep. After the Ortho-K lenses are worn at night, the wearer is able to see more clearly without the use of glasses or contact lenses when they wake up. This vision improvement is reversible (non-permanent), but can be maintained if you continue to wear the Ortho-K lenses as directed by your doctor.

The Ortho-K procedure has many advantages, namely:

- Non-invasive, no surgery required

- Ortho-K lenses are rigid gas permeable lenses that are sturdy enough to form the surface of the cornea, but also allow oxygen in so that your eyes remain healthy.

- Temporary. Once the user stops using Ortho-K, the cornea will return to its original shape a few days later, allowing the user to return to wearing glasses or contact lenses at any time. Users can also undergo LASIK or SMILE Pro after the use of Ortho-K has been discontinued for a certain period of time.

- From various studies on the use of Ortho-K, the results are very satisfactory.

Ortho-K is proven to reduce the progression of (myopia) and also control its increase compared to spectacle wearers.

What refractive errors can be treated with the Ortho-K procedure?

Ortho-K can be used for people with up to minus 6 and cylinder 2.5.

How is the Ortho-K Procedure?

1. First, you will need to have an examination with an ophthalmologist to measure the lenses to be used.

The ophthalmologist will map and measure the surface of your cornea using a tool called corneal topography and then design a (customized) lens for your eyes. The tool does not touch your eye and there is no pain. The corneal topography map shows the eye doctor the shape and curve of your cornea.

2. After the examination, a lens order is placed.

This process takes about 1-2 months as the lenses are imported directly from overseas.

3. When the lenses arrive, the first fitting will be done by the ophthalmologist as well as providing education on the use of Ortho-K lenses.

Who is suitable to use Ortho-K?

- There is no age limit for the use of Ortho-K lenses. They can be used for children, teenagers or adults who are not yet eligible for refractive surgery. Vision may continue to change in some children until around 18 years of age. Refractive surgery such as PRK/LASIK/SMILE is not recommended until vision has stabilized after 1 year.

- Ortho-K lenses may also be an option for those who are active in sports and work in dusty or outdoor environments, which can cause problems with contact lens wear during the day.

Are there any risks/side effects of Ortho-K lenses?

Ortho-K is a very safe option, although there is a very small potential risk of infection. The risk of infection can be avoided by keeping the Ortho-K contact lenses and their fluid clean, as well as regular consultation with an ophthalmologist. Ortho-K's rigid lens material with high oxygen permeability can also prevent bacteria from attaching to its surface, compared to the use of regular soft lenses.

How can I get Ortho-K service?

An initial examination or screening by an ophthalmologist is necessary to confirm the suitability of Ortho-K lenses. You can consult further with our ophthalmologist and contact Registration at WhatsApp number 081127007771 or phone 0274 - 544744, 550380
